Following are some of the more common troubles encountered and the recommended corrective measures involving variations in speeds and feeds.

| Excessive abrasion on the tool | Reduce speed, increase feed |
| Chipping of the cutting edge | Reduce feed per tooth |
| Burning of the cutting edge | Reduce speed |
| Cratering of cemented carbide | Reduce feed and speed |
| Chatter | Try other combinations of speeds and feeds |
